The area around the Chubut River, close to its mouth
in the Northeast of the Chubut province, is called Comarca
del Valle Inferior. From the Florentino Ameghino dam
to the Port of Rawson, the river joins different places
of interest: 28 de Julio, Dolavon, Gaiman, Trelew and
Rawson and Playa Unión. This valley encompasses
several natural, historic and cultural resources, which
make a good supplement to the experiences at Península
Valdés and Punta Tombo.
At 150 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean, there is
Dique Ameghino, a river dike mainly used for recreation
by local communities. It has an internal villa where
one may camp and enjoy adventure activities. Nearby,
along the route from the mountains toward the sea, Dolavon
is located. This is a small village in which the first
flour mill of the region still operates, as a reminder
of a time of abundant, excellent wheat harvests in the
valley.
Between Dolavon and Gaiman, the latter a milestone of
Welsh colonization, the Bryn Gwyn Paleontological Park
is located. This park contains paleontological profiles
of the marine Tertiary, a time in which the seas were
warm and other fauna inhabited the land and the Southern
oceans.
Continuing on the route westward, there is Gaiman, an
ancient Welsh colony in which some of the settlers'
traditions are conserved. In Gaiman there are some tea
houses, and in its suburbs there are many chapels still
in operation. The major city of the region is Trelew,
with some 90,000 inhabitants. It is a commercial centre
in a strategic location for land and air transportation.
The Egidio Feruglio Paleontological Museum and other
sites of historical interest are located in the city.
The Port of Rawson is located at the mouth of the Chubut
river, bordering the city of Playa Unión. Here
one can make recreational use of the beach, and in spring,
take excursions to see the Commerson's Dolphins (Cephalorynchus
commersonii).
